A multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) set in the long-lauded Lord of the Rings world, Guardians of Middle-earth aims to ensnare the console gamer with the MOBA genre's competitive potential. It follows in the footsteps of its predecessors like League of Legends and DOTA but sheds the shackles that bind it exclusively to the devoted and experienced.Guardians of Middle-earth will help you enter the sacred halls of MOBA... if you don't already know the way.Many gamers -- natural cynics or those of us burned by licensed games in the past -- might find the Lord of the Rings branding an immediate sign of danger; a mark of disease and decay. But the developers at Monolith believe the brand gives them access to an extensive lore that you already know. If a console gamer has no experience with the MOBA format, at least he or she will recognize Gandalf in all his bearded glory.And glorious he remains, as one of more than 20 guardians (i.e. characters) to control in sweeping 10-player battles. Each guardian falls into an overarching type, including the Defender, Striker, Warrior, Tactician, and Mage, and swears alignment to either the good or evil forces waging war in Middle-earth. Even easy. The interface and battle controls facilitate minimal fuss and promote an eager leap back into the action. Aiming your guardian with the right stick and deploying a skill with the push of a button will make sense to anyone with modest skill in competitive games, and upgrading your guardian takes seconds without any need to wade through menus.When the mighty guardians enter the fray, the battlefield will look familiar to anyone with League of Legends experience. Three lanes separate opposing bases and a set of automated towers protect each lane, along with similarly automated groups of soldiers (creeps). The ultimate goal of your team: slowly push through the defenses to destroy the precious crystal that sits inside the opposing team's base.During this coordinated push and pull your guardian of choice has all the usual weapons of war to wield. A standard attack deals with the creeps and serves as a default damage-dealing source. Each guardian also has four different special abilities -- one of which is locked at the start of the round -- that augment his or her role in battle.
